Johanne Dor

L’École de danse de Québec - Franklin

Johanne Dor began her career teaching jazz dance at l’École de danse Louise Lapierre in Montreal. She diversified her practice, becoming a choreographer, rehearsal director, and teacher at various professional dance schools in Quebec, other parts of Canada, and France. She taught at LADMMI (now named the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal) and gave intensive summer courses at Arts Umbrella in Vancouver. As a performer, she danced for the Groupe Nouvelle Aire, Linda Rabin, and Charles-Mathieu Brunelle.

In Quebec City, beginning in 1989, Johanne was a teacher, rehearsal director, and artistic assistant at Groupe Danse Partout until the company closed in 1996. She then became general and artistic director of La Rotonde until 2007, when she returned to teaching. She retired as a teacher of contemporary dance in 2021. Johanne is a certified Level 3 teacher of the Franklin method, with a focus on somatic approaches. She is still a member of the teaching team of l’École de danse de Québec, offering general courses to the public, and acts as rehearsal director in the school’s advanced training program.

Johanne Dor has served on a number of boards, including that of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec from 2001 to 2009. In 2000, she received the Prix du développement culturel for her contribution to the development of dance in Quebec City.

JURY NOTES

In its second year, the Prix Fait à Québec is awarded to Johanne Dor, an exceptional woman and outstanding pedagogue, in recognition of her entire career. The jury wished to highlight the significant impact of her work on dance in Québec City. In 1989, after a rich experience in Montréal, she joined Groupe Danse Partout, where she held various key roles until 1996. She then took the helm of La Rotonde, a cornerstone of creation and presentation in the capital, which she directed until 2007, before dedicating herself to teaching at L’École de danse de Québec. Her rigor, passion, wisdom, and curiosity make this pioneer an essential figure who continues to inspire and support younger generations, thereby contributing to the development of dance “made in Québec.”
